  • Scuba event raises $1,600 for Marine reservist's family

A fundraiser for the family of a local Marine reservist on his third deployment went over bigger than expected, said organizers of the event.

After hosting an underwater scuba poker tournament Saturday for Brian and Heather Ivers, the High Plains Scuba Center at 115 W. Harvard raised $1,600 for the family, said owner Jim Johnson. The center originally had hoped to raise $500, he said.

“It was the most money we’ve ever raised in any of our events over the years,” said Johnson who has been organizing fundraisers at the center for the past twenty years.

As part of the tournament, certified divers paid a $20 entry fee to play hourly games of poker in the center’s diving pool throughout the day. Weighted chips and tables made the games possible.
